Us special forces drive through Kirkuk in a show of force. Kurdish peshmerga forces in the town, an ethnic mix of Kurds, Turcomans and Arabs, are carefully watched by Turkey which fears the creation of an independent Kurdish state. They want the Kurds to leave Kirkuk and hand over the control to the American forces which are low in numbers. Kirkuk has been the scene of looting. The man on the poster in the background is Jalal Talabani, leader of the Patriottic union of Kurdestan, one of teh two Kurdish parties that now rule the town.
